Social media algorithms

Social media platforms shape the information that billions of people across the globe consume every day. Many believe there is a dangerous lack of transparency about how these platforms impact our families and society. Algorithms employed by these firms often amplify disinformation, conspiracy theories and hate speech to trigger outrage and fear among viewers, thereby ensuring these posts will be widely shared. Critics also worry about the growing use of AI and automated systems in critical areas of people's lives. Secret algorithms are now making consequential decisions regarding housing, employment, credit, and education.
As corporations increasingly rely on these systems, there are concerns that they may be plagued by bias, potentially leading to discriminatory outcomes. They say there is a need for greater transparency and accountability in the development and deployment of these systems. Advocates say it’s time to start holding these platforms accountable for the lack of transparency behind their algorithms. They wish to increase transparency into data collection by social media companies, and ensure independent researchers can access algorithm data and understand the type of information these companies are collecting on their users.
